What is a Keloid?

Keloids are enlarged and raised scars that grow over the margin of the original wound. Unlike normal scars, keloids can be painful, itchy, and may expand in size.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

  1. Why do I get keloids?
The cause of keloids is currently unknown.  However, they often run in families.

  2. How long will I have my keloid? Will it go away on its own?
Unlike a scar that may go away on its own, keloids do not decrease in size or go away withouttreatment. Keloids may even grow in size for weeks, months, or years, and, despite treatment or removal, keloids may return.

  3. I have a keloid on my earlobe after having my ear pierced. How can I prevent getting more keloids in the future?
Avoid piercing, tattooing, and cosmetic procedures.  However, if surgery is necessary, tell your doctor that you have keloids and certain precautions can be taken to decrease the risk of getting keloids after surgery.
